Barbara Hibbert PhD Thesis
University of Leeds 2006 The articulation of the study of
history at General Certificate of Education Advanced Level with the
study of history for an honours degree Abstract This thesis addresses the extent to which the study of history at A level provides a suitable preparation for the study of history at degree level, through a qualitative analysis of the experiences of students studying the subject in a range of institutions at both levels. It focuses on the perceptions of both students and teachers in a sample of A level providing institutions and a sample of traditional universities about the nature of the subject, teaching and learning strategies and the role of assessment and looks at similarities and differences in perceptions at the two levels. It discusses the way in which history at examination level seems to be becoming increasingly content laden and assessment driven and considers the apparently increasing dislocation between history in the final years of compulsory schooling and in higher education.
